Posterior Lumbar Instrumented Fusion

This surgical technique is used to treat some cases of intractable back pain, instability, and deformity of the spine unresponsive to conservative care. The use of pedicle screws and rods allows for immediate stabilization of the spine after correction of the deformity such as scoliosis or spondylolisthesis. In addition, there are situations where implants can be inserted between the vertebrae (in the disc space) from a posterior approach filled with bone graft or a genetic material called BMP. This is called a Posterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion or PLIF.

The decision to perform a fusion and the exact approach to be used is based on a comprehensive evaluation and detailed discussions with the patient and family. All non-surgical options are exhausted before surgical options are entertained.
