Epidural Steroid, Facet, Nerve Root and Pars Defect InjectionsBack pain syndromes are not easily diagnosed. These injections are classified as both diagnostic studies and treatments for some spine disorders. Typically, these areas are the suspected sites of pain generation. Hence, anesthetic medicines or steroids are introduced to either numb the area or decrease inflammation. If pain is taken away as a result of one of these procedures, the source of pain has been identified more clearly. This allows an accurate diagnosis to be made. We often use these as an adjunct to treatment. A decrease in pain after one of these injections may allow a patient to participate more easily in other treatments such as a therapeutic exercise program. These tests, however, are invasive and carry some minor risks with them. These are done at the hospital on an outpatient basis. Following the test it is normal to experience some discomfort or tenderness at the injection site. This usually abates within 24 hours. Patients are asked to keep a diary of whether the injection made their pain better or worse and to note how long the pain relief lasted. This provides our doctors valuable information in the diagnosis and treatment of certain spinal conditions. As you read this information, keep in mind that all treatment and outcome results are specific to the individual. Only your physician can provide you with a detailed list of your specific indications, precautions, potential adverse events, and other important medical information.
