Discography/ Discogram

This is a procedure used to identify symptomatic (i.e.…painful) discs. The doctor injects a dye into the disc in question. They usually inject another disc that appears normal for comparison. The test is designed to reproduce the patient’s typical pain syndrome. If the patient’s pain is reproduced, the test is said to be "concordant". This information may help the clinician in making further treatment decisions or recommendations. This test is most frequently used if there are several degenerated discs. Not all worn out discs are painful. Identification of symptomatic discs is often necessary to properly treat the problem.

This test is performed at the hospital. It will take approximately 60-90 minutes to complete, though this is dependent on the number of disc spaces evaluated. You will need to have someone drive you home from the test. It is normal to experience mild discomfort at the injection site for up to 24 hours following the test.

As you read this information, keep in mind that all treatment and outcome results are specific to the individual. Only your physician can provide you with a detailed list of your specific indications, precautions, potential adverse events, and other important medical information.
