Bone ScanA Bone Scan can be used to detect very fine stress fractures in bones, as well as arthritis, infections, or tumors. The patient is first injected with a material that "settles" into the bones over a period of a few hours. After the injection, the patient needs to wait 2-3 hours before the test can be completed. During the second part of the test, the patient lies on a scanning table and a camera moves back and forth over the entire body. An area of increased activity will light up brighter (hot spot) than other areas indicating a potential problem (i.e. arthritis). When the results are positive (meaning something is abnormal), further investigation may be warranted. As you read this information, keep in mind that all treatment and outcome results are specific to the individual. Only your physician can provide you with a detailed list of your specific indications, precautions, potential adverse events, and other important medical information.
